GEORGE CLEVERLEY
Last week I was able to meet up with my friends from George Cleverley for their trunk show here in New York. George Cleverley is perhaps the most prestigious Bespoke shoemaker in England today and as such they are in high demand all over the world. George Glasgow the current owner of the small family owned business regularly travels to Tokyo, Singapore, Seoul, Paris, Geneva and the U.S.A. for trunk shows.
A Bespoke shoe from Cleverley is all handmade in house from an individual last and takes approximately 3 months to make. These shoes are priced around $3650.00 which to the uninitiated may seem expensive, but when you consider the high quality and that the they offer complimentary repairs for life you can see the value. This was demonstrated perfectly ,when they showed me a pair of shoes they were repairing that were made by them back in the 60s(!). They looked very old but truly amazing for shoes that were half a century old, in fact they still looked better than any shoes in my wardrobe.
Over the past couple of years I have met up with George on his U.S visits and gone along to his trunk shows with various clients of mine. Last week I was just here for myself and ordered my first pair of Bespoke Shoes.
I decided to go for one of their signature pieces "The Churchill". Sir Winston was actually a Cleverley client, and he created this style of shoe. Obviously this company has a great heritage. They have in fact been making shoes for nearly a Century now and they show no signs of slowing down. I cant wait to see the results.
I will be reporting back on my personal experience with Cleverley at a later date and will be letting you all know the date and location of their next trunk show. In the meantime here is a link to their excellent website:
